Hiatus Hernia & GORD

The Problem

Hiatus hernia and GORD occur when the complex anti-reflux mechanisms of the stomach and diaphragm malfunction. This is often managed effectively with PPI (anti-acid) medications.

Reasons for Surgery

There are several reasons to consider an operation in this situation. Mr Murray will discuss these with you, however the common indications include:

  • Failure of medication to control symptoms
  • Complications due to the hernia or reflux
  • Complications of long-term medication use

The Operation

Hiatus hernia and anti-reflux surgery is performed via laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques, and aims to repair and reinforce the natural reflux barriers. Often, if appropriate, PPI medication can be reduced or stopped after this surgery.
